Who is eligible for an almshouse?
The provisions of scheme approved by the Charity Commission in 1964 are as follows:
Qualifying people have to be women or married couples aged over 60 years old that have lived in the Parish of Redbourn for at least 2 years and are in financial hardship.
The Trustees may, in exceptional circumstances, appoint up to a specified percentage of Alms people who have lived in Redbourn for a shorter time, or have never lived there, but who otherwise meet the qualifications above.
The Trustees may allow the husband of a resident married couple to continue to occupy an Almshouse of the Charities if the wife no longer lives there.
