REDBOURN COMMUNITY FOOD CLUB
Redbourn Community Food Club and The Redbourn Charities have joined together to provide more support for the people of Redbourn. At present, whilst everyone is affected by the increased cost of living, some are really suffering. The FareShare charity redistributes over-ordered food from all major supermarkets preventing it going to landfill.
The Redbourn Community Food Club is open every Thursday from 3.30 pm - 5 pm at St. Luke's School, Crouch Hall Lane, Redbourn. AL3 7ET, providing food and support for those in need in Redbourn.
There are no eligibility criteria, no judgment, no stigma. People can come twice to try it before having to join.
For a £10 annual membership fee and a £5 (or £10) weekly contribution, £25 (or £50) worth of food can be obtained from the club. Both Redbourn schools have committed to pay £10 membership for all families on free school meals.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
One of the first villagers to hear about the Food Club scheme sent this comment:
This is such a great initiative, especially for those of us who have not ever been to a food bank, and in all honesty, do not feel happy about going to a food bank. With the food club, we can retain a certain amount of dignity, in that we are at least paying something towards the food.
Thank you for all of your hard work, helping those of us on lower incomes.
The Complimentary roles of Food banks and Food Clubs
QUESTION - What is the difference between a food bank and a food club?
Do they compete against each other?
ANSWER - No
A food bank supports people in crisis - for example their debts may have escalated out of control. The foodbank in Redbourn works closely with Citizens Advice to help support those in crisis and help resolve the problem such as negotiating smaller debt repayment. During this crisis time food is provided to help. The Trussell Trust usually provide three emergency food parcels within a six-month period.
A food club is a form of intervention before a crisis occurs. It enables family units, whatever the size, to access self-chosen food for a small membership fee.
The annual fee of £10, and a weekly cost of £5, is set nationally and all this money is ploughed back into running the club d to obtain more food.
For £5 a week, food up to the value of £25 can be chosen. Each family unit is able to have two memberships - resulting in £10, enabling shopping up to the value of £50 to be selected.
Here in Redbourn the hope is the food club will help those struggling in the economic crisis with food and fuel costs and rent/mortgage repayments.
QUESTION - Can a family unit receive food parcels and also join the food club?
ANSWER - Yes, they complement one another and are both aimed at supporting people in these tough times.
